SHY OF PIMPLES…? SHINE WITH AYURVEDA

You look onto the mirror, to see your pretty face,

But don’t see anything else, except a haze

A big pimple now has occupied the space

All you can hope that it leaves no trace!

The Pimple

With the hormonal changes taking place and body constantly evolving, pimples give a traumatic time with ugly breakouts here and there on the face. In severe cases it may appear on upper chest and on the upper parts of the shoulder hitting our self-esteem and putting us in an all-time low situation. The insecurity and dejection is hard to cope with, especially in an age bracket of 13-23 years.

Growth of the pimple

Each of the hair follicles in our body is connected to a gland that secretes an oily substance to lubricate skin. To do that, a substance known as sebum needs to move up the hair shaft and out the opening of a follicle. But sometimes the sebum acts almost like a glue to dead cells being shed by the skin. Together they form a soft plug that blocks the shaft while the sebatious gland continues to produce sebum. The growing blockage can stimulate local bacteria like staphylococcus to reproduce. Increased bacteria will lead to reactions from the immune system, pimple being the visible evidence of this process. White puss is formed from the accumulation of sebum, dead cells and bacteria; the redness is caused by the inflammation as the immune system tries to kill the bacteria.

Ayurveda’s Perspective:

Ayurveda attributes the growth of a pimple mainly to the faulty food habits and the triggering hormonal changes inside the body.Excess Kapha, which controls the production of sebum, results in clogging of the pores. An imbalance in Vata results in impaired digestion and accumulation of toxins .The imbalance of Pitta affects the blood resulting in inflammation. This combination  Organic Essential Oils of impaired digestion, accumulating toxins, inflammation, and over-production of sebum creates the perfect environment for the overgrowth of bacteria resulting in pimples. The overgrowth of bacteria is only an effect of the underlying imbalances, but not the ultimate cause of pimple. Ayurveda advices well balanced diet and healthy time-schedule for the intake of food. The irrational food habits include Adhashana (consuming food at short intervals), Virudhashana (consuming incompatible foods like fish and milk together) and Vishamashana (which involves consuming food with disregard to body cravings).

Prevention and Treatment:

PANCHAKARMA:Panchakarma is effective in correcting imbalances and eliminating the harmful Ama out of our system through the body’s own channels. Panchakarma purifies the skin at a very deep level and involves daily massages, oil baths, herbal enemas and nasal administrations. Ayurveda recommends panchakarma as a seasonal treatment for maintaining beautiful skin free of pimples. Some of the processes of panchakarma effective in curing pimples are:-

VAMANA OR MEDICATED VOMITING: Suitable medicines are orally given to induce vomiting. This procedure is very useful in blockage of subtle channels or srothas of facial skin.

VIRECHANA OR MEDICAL PURGATION: It is a cleansing method, performed by giving bitter, astringent and sweet herbal purgatives which bring down abnormally increased pitta principle. This procedure is beneficial in stages of inflammatory changes.

NASYA: This Ayurvedic treatment is beneficial for all doshas, particularly vata and kapha. Nasal administration of suitable medicine is effective in chronic clinical conditions of pimple.

WORRYING OF PCOD…? BURY IT WITH AYURVEDA

Being a mother is a wonderful feeling. Who would not want to have a baby, healthy and active? The transformation of a girl being a lady, and the lady being a mother is a blissful journey called womanhood. However, PCOD hinders the natural course of this journey, affecting the ability to conceive a child. The physical and mental health of a woman is disturbed with the onset of PCOD!

What is PCOD?

Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) is a common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age. It is a condition where hormonal imbalance affects the follicular growth during the ovarian cycle, causing the affected follicles to remain in the ovary. If you have PCOD, your pituitary gland may release abnormally high amount of luteinizing hormone into your blood stream disrupting your normal menstrual cycle. As a result your follicle does not mature and ovulation does not occur, which can lead to infertility.

In addition, your doctor will find your blood with high levels of insulin. Too much insulin combined with high levels of luteinizing hormone can lead to excess production of male hormone called testosterone in your ovaries, abnormally high amount of testosterone prevent ovulation.

Infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne and obesity can all occur in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. In adolescents, infrequent or absent menstruation may signal the condition. In women past adolescence, difficulty becoming pregnant or unexplained weight gain may be the first sign. Early diagnosis and treatment may reduce the risk of long-term complications, such as type-2 diabetes and heart disease.

Ayurveda’s perspective on PCOD

Ayurveda classifies PCOD as a kapha disorder. Kapha having first affected the digestive fire – jatharaagni starts to affect the metabolic aspect of the seven tissues called dhatu agni. Each dhatu agni is responsible for the nourishment and formation of that particular tissue that it resides in. In the case of PCOD the dhatus affected are rasa dhatu – lymph and plasma, meda dhatu – adipose tissue and artava dhatu – the female reproductive system. Ama, entering the cells of arthavadhathu begins to affect the cellular intelligence of the cell by dampening pitharaagni causing error in cellular function and intelligence. Mistake of cellular intelligence is also expressed in the inhibiting of apoptosis – death of defective cells.

Prevention and treatment

Ayurveda adheres in preventing PCOD in a natural way by balancing the doshas. Apart from the miraculous panchakarma, Ayurveda suggests various herbs along with dietary and lifestyle changes to cure this disease.

Panchakarma

It is an in-depth Ayurvedic treatment which completely cleanses the body, mind and emotions from toxins. It rejuvenates the body by reducing weight and restores regular menstruation cycle and ovulation. It provides strength to the reproductive organs like uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and vagina and maintains hormonal balance. Panchakarma protocol helps to high degrees in clearing many pathologies which inhibits fertility. Each person receives a unique combination of five processes according to their specific health needs.

Various healing processes involved in Panchakarma are:

  1. Basti – Enema of medicated oil or Decoction is given through rectum which helps in expelling vitiated vata. In females oil Basti of “Sahachar Tail” improves quality of ovulation within normal days.
  2. Uttarbasti :Uttara basti is the most effective treatment in gynecological disorders. It helps in purification and clears the AartavaVahaSrotas, pacifies vitiated ApanaVayu and improves follicular maturity. After proper completion of uttar basti it has been observed that follicles do rupture naturally without any hormonal injections.
  3. Virechan: It eliminates body toxins like vitiated ‘Pitta’. The process of cleansing is carried out in the small intestine & other Pitta zones. Here drugs that stimulate bowel movement are increased for the expulsion of doshas through rectum.
  4. Vaman: It is a cleansing procedure intended mainly for the expulsion of vitiated ‘Kapha’. This is a painless, drug induced emetic procedure. Vaman procedure purifies internal toxins and balances hormonal system and stimulates pancreas to secrete insulin in normal level, so PCOD decreases accordingly.

Herbs

Certain herbal medicines can regulate PCOD by balancing the hormones. They include blue cohosh, false unicorn root, milk thistle and dandelion to regulate the sex hormones. Other herbs taken by Indian women to help manage insulin resistance include neem, tulsi, fenugreek and basil. Cinnamon also provides support for people with insulin resistance. Flax seed and evening primrose oil provide Omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, which are helpful to the cardiovascular system.

  1. Ashwagandha roots – Ashwagandha is a popular herbal supplement with extensive applications in traditional Indian and Ayurvedic medicine. Ashwagandha has been highly prized as a treatment for impotence and infertility. Ashwagandha root is highly prescribed in Ayurveda for the treatment of PCOD. Anexclusive blend made with ashwagandha roots and arjun bark is prescribed for PCOD patients.
  2. Sesame seeds – Boil 5 gms black sesame seeds in 100 ml water. Filter and add organic jaggery anddrink it two times a day in empty stomach. This simple remedy can be continued till proper menses is achieved.
  3. Castor oil – It is a fatty acid and has been used in Ayurveda as a treatment for dissolving ovarian cysts. It is easily absorbed through the skin and is beneficial to the blood and lymph vessels, uterus, bowels and fallopian tubes. A castor oil pack is placed on the abdomen to improve circulation and promote the healing of organs under the skin. Castor oil packs are specific to benign uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts. Do not use castor oil on uterine growths or cancerous tumors. Pregnant women should not use a castor oil pack.
  4. Alum is an excellent medicine used in Ayurveda to stop bleeding. Crush the purified alum and roast it in an iron vessel and make it into a powdery form. Take 1/2 gam of this powder with 10gms crystal sugar and 50ml water two times a day till bleeding stops.

Yoga and Diet

Relaxation is the key in Polycystic Ovarian Disease. Posture’s designed for PCOD helps open up the pelvic area & promote relaxation and strength to the entire reproductive organs. You can relax in the asana by coordinating it with breathing.  Pranayama’s (breathing exercises) are powerful techniques that help calm the mind. Yoga has several poses that aids in weight loss, relieves stress and improves blood circulation to the ovary, thus naturally curing PCOD.

The diet plan should be tailored as per individual requirement and degree of insulin resistance. Ayurveda advices to choose low Glycemic Index (G.I) foods – such as cauliflower, tomatoes, onions, peaches, apples, and grapefruit for those suffering from PCOD. These food items help in slowing the rise in blood sugar levels and pacify the strength of the disease. Eating at regular intervals is advised strongly.Restriction of food is another major aspect.

Ayurveda medication along with yoga and diet, works wonders in women with PCOD. Practicing the same on a regular basis makes the journey called womanhood, a wonderful experience.

Flex yourFrozen Shoulder!

SupernaturalAyurveda revealing secrets for staying active& agile everyday

Frozen shoulder or Adhesive Capsulitisis a condition characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. It occurs as a result of inflammation, scarring, thickening and shrinkage of the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint.Signs and symptoms are shown gradually and gets worseover time. Usually it occurs on any one side, only in rare cases it spreads to the other shoulder too. Now Frozen Shoulder is a commoncomplaint almost affecting about two to five percent of the general population.

Some myths on Frozen Shoulder:

  • It happens only to people mostly aged in 40’s to 60’s.
  • Women are more prone to frozen shoulder than men.

Causes

The ligaments and tendons that make up the shoulder joint are encased in a capsule of connective tissue. Frozen shoulder occurs when this capsule thickens and tightens around the shoulder joint, restricting its movement.

It can be majorly due to particular causes like synovitis (the lining of a joint becomes inflamed), rupture of the capsule etc. A history of trauma, arm in a sling for long time, immobilized in a specific position for a prolonged period etc. can also result in the disorder.
Diabetes too is a commonly associated condition with frozen shoulder.
Symptoms

Symptoms are variable depending on its cause. Pain is the usual symptom which is accompanied by muscle spasm and limitation of movements. It often worsens at night especially when lying on the affected side. People having frozen shoulder find difficulty with normal daily tasks such as dressing, carrying bags and working. Muscle wastage also may be evident due to the lack of usage.

Tests

The physical examination by a doctor is needed to check for pain and evaluate your range of motion. Frozen shoulder can usually be diagnosed from signs and symptoms alone, X-rays or an MRI may be taken to rule out other structural problems.

According to Ayurveda- frozen shoulder is known as Apabahuka that comes under vata nanatmaja roga. The vitiated vata dosha absorbs the fluid (kapha) of the joint causing Ababahuka.

Treatment

First and foremost, it is essential to carry out a careful clinical examination as many diseases of diverse originsare frequently associated with musculoskeletal symptoms.
1) Physiotherapy is quite effective in acute condition.
2) Anti-inflammatory drugs.

Home remedies

Try and practise the usage of the affected shoulder in extremity in daily life activities as possible within the limits of your pain and range-of-motion constraints.

To relieve pain, applying heat or cold to your shoulder will help.
Ayurvedic treatments-

If frozen shoulder is caused by secondary group than the other ailments, the Panchakarma and Kerala therapy is very effective. The aim of the Ayurvedic treatment is to bring vitiated vata in equilibrium.
Most popular therapy is pizhichil, which implies pouringthe medicated oil over the body with more concentration on affected shoulder for about 45 to 60 minutes. It is a process of fomentation.

Elakizhi– Special herbal pack massage with Pizhichil gives strength to the muscle and improves the mobility of shoulder joint.
Nasyam –It is one among the famous panchakarma therapy; known to be a powerful rejuvenating treatment.

Requirement of Therapy– 7, 14 or 21 days course depending on the severity of the symptoms along with oral intake of medicines for 3-4months.

Loosing days to Migraine…? Ayurveda defeats migraine like none other……

Headache is a term which literally describes pain felt anywhere in the head. It poses certainly the commonest, probably the most ambiguous and sometimes the most difficult clinical problem. A migraine headache can cause intense throbbing or a pulsing sensation in one area of the head and is commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.

Migraine attacks can cause significant pain from hours to days and may be so severe that it may cause thevictim to settle down in an eccentric dark & quiet place distant from the tangible world. Some migraines are preceded or accompanied by sensory warning symptoms (aura), such as flashes of light, blind spots, or tingling in your arm or leg. The right medicines, combined with self-help remedies and lifestyle changes, can make a big difference in terms of curing these terrible headaches.

Migraine attacks may be caused by variety of factors such as menstruation, flashing light, lack of sleep, physical & emotional stress and anxiety.Allergies to certain types of substances like Cheese, red wine, strong perfumes, Chocolate, sour fruits, skipping meals, can be the common precipitants.

Attack

A migraine attack usually lasts from four to seventy two hours, but the frequency with which headaches occur varies from person to person if it is not treated or cared in time. You may have migraines several times a month or much less often.

When you have a migraine attack, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • A pulsating and throbbing pain on one side or both sides of your head
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to Light, Sounds and even Smells
  • Excessive Sweating.

According to Ayurveda- Triggering factors cause vitiation of vata and kapha. Vitiated vata covers the kapha in the arterial wall. This vata avrita kapha affects the dhamanis of brain and decreases the circulation, leads to headache, and sensation of vomiting. Avrita kapha clears after vomiting and patient has relief from headache. In more simple terms – The repeated mucus accumulation in the Vascular System that connects brain reduces the circulation of blood to brain inducing severe head-ache and sensation of vomiting. Most of the times, after vomiting the mucus congestion is cleared which passes us an immediate relief from the headache.

Prevention and Treatment:-

A carefully recorded history and a meticulous examination followed by full explanation of the nature and occurrences of migraine are necessary to exclude the other diseases which are associated with migraine.

In migraine, it is always better to avoid the conditions that can trigger the issue,as it’s universally quoted,“Prevention is better than cure”:-

Here are certain things to focus in order to avoid the intensification of the attack:

  • Avoid bright lights
  • Get a sound sleep & try not to sleep late
  • Don’t skip meals; make habit to take frequent meals at right intervals.
  • Always Keep in mind what you eat

If Migraine happens habitually two weeks before the menstruation, then low level of progesterone hormone might be responsible for this problem;so please consult your doctor accordingly.

If one gets migraine attack then,

  • Try &lie down in dark room or at-least find a room far off from heavy sounds and strong lights.
  • Put an ice pack wrapped in a towel on the head.

Or else as soon as you feel the headache- take analgesics/painkillers or other medicines to reduce stress and pain and go to sleep.

Treatments in Ayurveda:

In Ayurveda, Pancha karma and Kerala therapies are effective.

  • Shirodhara- A continuous stream of medicated oil is dripped on the forehead along with a gentle massage all over the body which relaxes, smoothens and maintains the circulation in the brain by reducing the spasm of the blood vessel.

  • Nasyam is also advised.

  • Siroabhyanga-Special medicated oil is poured on top of the head and is left for some time. A gentle massage is then given for the head for relaxation.

Requirement of Therapy–After the 7, 14 or 21 days course of Shirodhara, Siroabhyanga is advised which will help benifit you a permanent cure along with intake of medicines.

Here is the list of a few oral medications:-

  • Drakshadi Kashayam
  • Varnadi Kashyam
  • GuduchyadiKashyam
  • DrakshadiLeham
  • Balahathadithailam for applying on head.

If it is related to menstruation then, have uterine tonics which maintains the hormonal balance eg:-Musalikhadiradi Kashayam, Asokarishtam, Kumaryasavam.

DOES THYROID HAVE ANY CURE…? WELL, WITH AYURVEDA,LIVE IN HARMONY &BE REST ASSURED!

Did you know that thyroid patients when treated with holistic Ayurveda have better healing chances…? Well, you heard it right, the very own ancient Indian medicinal practice has the best cure for the millions of thyroid sufferers worldwide!

METABOLISM AND THYROID GLAND

Certain biochemical processes which take place inside the body are influential in the growth, repair, response and maintenance of our life. These processes are collectively called as metabolism and are performed by a line of endocrine glands. They secrete hormones into the lymph and blood, and helps in the sustenance of any living organism.

Thyroid, a butterfly shaped endocrine gland situated at the lower part of the neck, plays an important role in body’s metabolism. Without a functional thyroid, a living organism would not be able to break down proteins and will be incapable of processing carbohydrates and vitamins. Thyroid secretes thyroxin, which stimulates the consumption of oxygen, leading to the metabolism of all cells and tissues in the body. The result of this process is a healthy physical growth.

The over-secretion (hyperthyroidism) and under-secretion (hypothyroidism) of thyroxin in the body result in unbalanced chemical changes accounting to numerous health problems.

AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE ON THYROID DISORDERS

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medicinal practice, terms the bio-chemical (metabolism) process as ‘agni,’ responsible for all the activities inside the body, up to the cellular level. Major literatures of Ayurveda share its clear idea about thyroid disorder and its treatment. Ayurveda attributes the cause of thyroid disease to the imbalance of tri-doshas caused by climatic conditions, impure water intake, in-nutritious foods and unhealthy dietary habits. Kashyapa Samhita (a treatise on Ayurveda attributed to the sage Kashyap) ascribes some climatic conditions like coldness, dampness, water stagnation and heavy rains in the promotion of this disease.

HYPOTHYROIDISM

The inadequate functioning of thyroid gland results in the reduced levels of thyroxin secretion which leads to hypothyroidism.  Ayurveda attributes the root cause of this dysfunction to the vitiated Kapha and Pitta doshas. Sluggishness of bodily functions, depressed muscular activity, slow pulse, hoarseness of voice, decreased immune functioning with recurrent infections, constipation, irritability, sensitivity to cold, depression and dry skin are some the symptoms of this disease.

Having a 30ml decoction with the bark of Kaanchanaaraor Punarnava plant twice a day on an empty stomach is efficient in treating mild cases. Kaanchanaara guggulu and Punarnawaadi guggulu, the pills containing these herbs are popularly used for the treatment of this disease.  Certain other recommendations include the consumption of foods that are naturally high in iodine such as fish, shell fish, white onions, potatoes, asparagus, etc.  Ayurveda also prohibits foods that naturally slow down the functioning of the thyroid such as cabbage, mustard-greens, cauliflower, maize, sweet potatoes, and spinach for the patients suffering from hypothyroidism.

HYPERTHYROIDISM

Hyperthyroidism is a condition that encompasses several different diseases, all characterized by production of too much hormone, resulting in an overactive metabolic state. Many of the body’s processes speed up with this disorder; rapid heart rate, palpitation, shallow respiration, frequent bowel motions, menstrual disturbance and excessive fatigue are some of the symptoms of this disease. Intake of foods that are natural suppressors of thyroid gland is a natural remedy for this disease.

Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, turnips, mustard greens, spinach and radishes in your diet can decrease the secretion of thyroxin. Certain other food items that trigger the hormone like iodized salts, sea foods, red meat, dairy products nicotine and alcohol should be avoided.

Dandelion Leaves – The paste of these leaves along with clarified butter is efficient in treating goiter, the main disease caused by hyperthyroidism. The mixture in lukewarm should be applied to the swollen area of the neck. Leave it for 20 minutes. Doing it daily for two weeks will yield great relief.

Flax Seeds – Ancient Ayurvedic practitioners used the anti-inflammatory properties of flax seeds to cure goiter. The seed is a powerhouse of anti-oxidents which is effective in countering the disease. Make a thick paste by mixing two tbsp. of crushed flax seeds with equal amount of water. Apply it on the throat.

YOGA

The massage and stimulation that thyroid glands receive while practicing yoga, is beneficial for the balance and functioning of the entire endocrine system. The Asanas also helpin proper functioning of the gland, by developing blood circulation and flow of energy. Some of the yoga stances that curtail thyroid dysfunction are:

Matsyasana and Halasana: The stretching and compression involved in these yogasana’s rejuvenates and revitalizes thyroid gland and wards off any illnesses present. These miraculous Asanas also renew energy, lower stress, and reduce the muscle and joint stiffness accompanied with thyroid dysfunction.

Pranayama: The improper functioning of thyroid can lead to mood swings and depression. It becomes very difficult for the patients to attain peaceful mind and body. Pranayama, the most important breathing exercise in yoga induces calmness and concentration needed for the person.

Ayurveda is undoubtedly your best resort in dealing with thyroid dysfunction. The herbs collected from the lap of nature are safe and highly effective in treatment of this disease, and when accompanied with miraculous yoga stances and healthy diets, you can keep your worries at bay.

Diabetes – Why You Get It How You Treat It -Ayurveda

Diabetes is now truly an epidemic! The number of patients diagnosed with the disease, continue to rise in a daunting figure; many are in a dilemma how to resolve this problem, while several others are under the spell of misconceptions and myths about diabetes. Before delving deep into this condition, it is very important to know what our body does with the food we consume.

What happens Post-Digestion?
The foods we consume are made up of three basic nutrients- carbohydrates, proteins and fats. As the food is digested, carbohydrates are turned into sugar (glucose) for the production of energy. During this process, a series of chemical reactions take place, starting with the flow of sugar from stomach that reaches muscles and fat cells through blood stream. The entry of sugar into these cells is aided by insulin, a hormone produced by pancreas. Insulin acts as a key in opening the doors of each body cell, thereby allowing sugar to enter. These cells then use this sugar to generate energy needed for the growth and regeneration of the whole body. Sugar entering the blood stream from the stomach is thus able to exit at the muscle and fat cells.

Who is Diabetic?
In simple terms, a person becomes diabetic when his sugar levels in the body become uncontrollably high. It can happen in two ways, either the pancreas stop producing enough insulin or the body cells become underactive resulting in the accumulation of sugar in blood stream. As the sugar fails to enter the cells, the body becomes weak and turns underactive to make the fuel it needs. The problem may be manifested through symptoms like weight loss, tiredness, constant hunger, frequent urination and change in vision. Overtime, exposure to this extreme sugar levels can cause damage to vital organs connected to the blood stream.

Ayurveda on Diabetes
The traditional healthcare system of India, Ayurveda, offers a balanced and holistic multi-modality approach to treating this disorder. This ancient Indian medical system describes diabetes under the broad category of ‘Prameha’. Ayurveda considers diabetes in three stages- early (Kaphaja Prameha), acute (Pittja Prameha) and chronic (Vataja Prameha). Ayurveda insists each individual to understand his own nature and asks to cultivate eating habits according to it. The insufficient digestion leads to incomplete metabolism and paves way to the creation of ama, a toxic material. Ama forms a cover in the small intestine and duodenum thereby prohibiting the secretion of essential enzymes needed for the health of cells. Ayurveda also accuses stress as a psychic factor which can also cause neuroendocrine changes. Ayurveda recognizes the impact of emotional changes on diabetes and considers emotions as psycho- physiological phenomenon effecting automatic responses that may result in hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Ayurveda’s diabetes care encompasses herbs, healthy diet, yoga, and meditation to counter this life-threatening disease.
Since ancient times, plants have been an exemplary source of medicine and Ayurveda mentions the use of many of them in the treatment of Prameha. These plants also supplement us with effective home remedies to pacify the effect of diabetes in our body. Some of them are as follows:-
• BITTERGOURD – This healthy rich vegetable has the power to lower the blood sugar in diabetes. This vegetable reduces glucose transport into the blood.
Remove the skin and seeds of five bitter gourds and make a juice by grinding it on a juicer. Drink on empty stomach every morning.
• CINNAMON – This miraculous spice is a safe and effective way to help control blood sugar level. The aromatic and flavorsome spice can also replace sweetener in your meals which helps in reducing your sugar intake.
Boil one liter of water and let it simmer for 20 minutes in low flame. While it is simmering add three tbsp. of cinnamon powder. Strain the mixture and drink it every day.
• FENUGREEK SEEDS – Fenugreek plant has sharp bitter-tasting seeds that are extremely beneficial for treating diabetic conditions. It has anti-diabetic properties that can enhance insulin secretion for hyperglycemic patients.
Soak four tbsp. of fenugreek seeds in 250 ml of water overnight. Crush them in the morning. Sieve the mixture and collect the water. Drink it daily.
Yoga for Diabetes
This chronic disease is effectively controlled if you make yoga an essential part of your daily life. Yoga increases insulin stimulation and lowers blood sugar levels. The controlled breathing involved in various asanas also counter the mood swings accompanied with the disease and makes you focused and concentrated.
• ARDHA MALSYENDRASANA – This yoga stance detoxifies all your internal organs including your pancreas and makes your body work in a balanced way.
• PASCHIMOTTASANA – Cortisol, the stress hormone raises your blood sugar level. Doing this yoga stance relaxes your body and decreases the stress hormone back to the normal level.

With diabetes blanketing over the health of the modern world, it’s now time for us to resort to the best treatment practice in the Word – Ayurveda.
It teaches one simple thing – One third of the stomach should be for food, one third for water and the remaining for the digestion process to take place. This magical mantra will sure keep your diabetes at bay. Follow the health schedule prescribed by this holistic system of medicine and bask in a diabetes-free life.

Kick Out Obesity and Inviting Happiness through Ayurveda

‘LONGER THE WAIST LINE, SHORTER THE LIFE LINE’

Obesity is a very common nutritional disorder in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health. The issue, i.e. the abnormal accumulation of fat in the stores of adipose tissue throughout the body is more than just a cosmetic concern. The condition can lead to many other serious maladies and health problems such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and high blood pressure.Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing prevalence in adults and children, and experts view it as one of the most serious public health problems of the modern day decade.

The simplest yet thebest part is, even just losing a few pounds can improve or prevent the severe health problems related with Obesity. You can generally lose weight through making some changes in your life style especially by controlling diet and embracing physical activities.

In Ayurveda in order to reduce or prevent obesity, there are medications and therapies along with many lifestyle management methods.

Who is said to be Obese?

Obesity is spotted when an individual’s Body Mass Index (BMI) is 30 or higher. BMI is obtained by dividing body weight in kilograms by the height of the person in meters.

Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 — 24.9 Normal
25.0 — 29.9 Overweight
30 & Above Obese

Causes

The Obese conditionarises when you eat and drink more calories than that you burn through exercise and normal daily activities – Your body tends to store these extra calories as fat. Obesity usually results from a combination of causes and contributing factors, including:

  • Inactivity:If you’re not very active, you don’t burn as many calories. With a sedentary lifestyle, you can easily take in more calories every day than you burn off through exercise and normal daily activities.
  • Unhealthy diet and eating habits:Having a diet that’s high in calories, eating fast food, skipping breakfast, consuming high-calorie drinks and eating oversized portions all contribute to weight gain.
  • Lack of sleep:Not getting enough sleep at night can cause changes in hormones that increase your appetite. You mayalso crave foods high in calories and carbohydrates, which can contribute to weight gain.
  • Side-effects of medicines/drugs:Some medications can lead to weight gain if you don’t compensate through diet or activity.
  • Medical problems: Obesity can rarely be traced to a medical cause but there are chances, polycystic ovary syndrome, Hypothyroidism, and other diseases and also conditions like pregnancy can lead to the said.

The Ayurvedic Perspective on Obesity:

Immune system mechanism of the body depends upon the Agni(enzymes) and dhastus. When first dhatu rasa is defective it affects the successive dhatu, because each dhatu is nourished by the previous dhatu. If we want to keep tri-doshas in a state of health and equilibrium, Ayurveda recommends a specific nutriment, dincharya (daily routine), ritu charya (seasonal routine) for any specific prakriti. If a person with kapha prakriti consumes food which is sweet and heavy in nature, and indulges in a sedentary life style, i.e.sleeps during the day and performs little or no exercise whatsoever.

  • There is more nourishment of Meda dhatu.
  • Increased meda dhatu creates Shrotoavarodha(Blockage of channels)
  • No nourishment of further dhatus.

These three can cause for more accumulation of meda in your body.

The major health risks of Obesity are Stroke, Breathing problems, cardiovascular diseases, Fatty liver etc.

Is obesity a lifestyle disorder??

We have a major, serious health crisis. It’s called obesity. Does it mean we don’t have enough fruits and
vegetables around?? Or don’t we know our present lifestyle is a serious threat to our existence?
In spite of being aware of this, we still persist with the unhealthy fast-food centric sedentary way of life.
Obesity has now acquired epidemic proportions in the country with more than 5 per cent of the
population suffering from it. Indians are genetically vulnerable to fat accumulation particularly around
the waist.

According to the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS), Punjab is ranked first among the states
that have most number of obese people, followed by Kerala. It has grown to such a level that obesity
is called “New World Syndrome” nowadays. A recent study has found that obesity is high among
schoolchildren, and the major causes identified are lifestyle changes and high-calorie food intake.
Medical experts believe this is only the tip of an iceberg and the incidence is growing.

Obesity is sure not just a disease, but a lifestyle disorder.

Obesity is by definition excess of fat storage rather than weight. Men with more than 25% of total body
fat and women with more than 30% total body fat are considered obese.

Most working Indians are overscheduled and overcommitted nowadays. They are on the run right from
the start and never get time to craft out a proper health plan or even prepare nutritious meals. It is just
too easy to grab fast food on the way home from work, or treat the kids to a thick milkshake/junk
roadside food after a busy day at school. Unfortunately, people do not bother about the consequences
of such unhealthy foodstuffs and lifestyle until the precarious health hazards comes knocking at their
doors.

Ayurveda- a permanent trusted resolution against lifestyle diseases

Ayurveda is becoming popular these days among people who are looking for a permanent solution to

major lifestyle diseases, especially obesity. The major attraction of Ayurveda is that unlike modern
medicines, it doesn’t just heal the symptoms, but treats the root cause of the disease.

Ayurveda is natural, free from side-effects and at-most reliable. It existed decades before
pharmaceutical companies took over our lives. It is pure nature. It is not treatment; it is inspiring to
breathe a healthy lifestyle, transforming the present sedentary to a sparkling richer one.

Ayurveda is based on the premise that human body has three basic principles or doshas: Vata (air), Pitta
(fire) and Kapha (water). According to Ayurveda, every individual has a unique balance of these doshas,
and when it is lost, the person falls ill.

Kapha – the root cause

In Ayurveda, Obesity is known as Medarog. It is caused by excess accumulation of meda (fat) and
aggravation of Kapha. When the body’s calorie intake is more than the amount of calories burned in a
day, the excess calories get stored in the body as fat.

In a balanced state, Kapha nourishes the body, but when it is aggravated, Kapha produces toxins, which
is called ama in the body due to improper diet, chronic stress and environmental pollutants. These
toxins are semi-solid in nature and accumulate in weaker channels of the body, blocking the free flow of
blood and essential nutrients.

Ayurveda helps you fight obesity naturally

In Ayurveda, the treatment for obesity begins with the pacification of Kapha Dosha. This is done by

eliminating Kapha-aggravating foods from the diet of a person, and the treatments focus on cleansing
the various channels in the body where excess fat is accumulated.

Treating obesity the authentic ayurveda way

The treatment for obesity in Ayurveda concentrates more on removing the toxins or ama from the body.

Fat cells expand when ama accumulates in them. This makes weight-losing more complicated and
challenging, especially around the waist, thighs and stomach. If the ama is not removed, it could affect
digestion and cause physical as well as mental exhaustion, joint pain, and could also negatively impact
one’s immune system.

Ayurveda does not seek to treat the symptom of obesity but uses age-old techniques and focuses on
why your fat cells are getting bigger, and gives you long term solutions.

Ayurveda promotes embracing several vegetables in diet that help obese people lose their discarded
weight. For a couple of instant examples, Cabbage helps preventing conversion of carbohydrates into
fat, a tablespoon of honey in Luke-warm water every morning helps burning excess fat deposited in the
body and many more.

Premature health hazards are never tempting. Make happiness a part of your life.

Bring back your real spirit through ayurveda.

Make sure to discuss your individual symptoms  with your doctor to determine the correct  diagnosis and treatment plan.
Common causes of back pain involve disease or injury to the muscles, bones or nerves of the spine.Poor posture,  osteoporosis, scoliosis, Sprain or strain of muscles or ligaments in the area can also lead to low back pain.Over weight, Lack of proper exercise or incorrect exercise can also lead to low back pain. Pain arising from abnormalities of organs within the abdomen, pelvis, or chest may also be felt in the back. This referred pain can be noticed  in Aappendicitisaneurysms, kidney diseases, bladder infections, pelvic infections, and ovarian disorders are a few. Even normal pregnancy can cause back pain.
When a nerve is directly irritated  (nerve impingement) due to a herniation (or bulging) of the disc, the pain tends to be sharp, affecting a specific area, and numbness in the area of affected nerve supplies. Some of the major causes of Low back pain are briefed below.

Herniated discs develop as the spinal discs degenerate or grow thinner. The jellylike central portion of the disc bulges out of the central cavity and pushes against a nerve root. Inter vertebral discs begin to degenerate usually in thirties.

Sciatica pain usually travels down to one lower extremity.Usually a shooting pain like electricity, burning sensation or tingling .The pain can range from slightly annoying to totally unbearable.

* Spondylitis is termed as noninfectious inflammation of the spine. This can cause stiffness and pain in the spine that is particularly      worse in the morning. Ankylosing spondylitis typically begins in adolescents and young adults.
Spondylosis occurs when inter vertebral discs lose their moisture and volume with age. This decreases the disc height. Even minor trauma or sprain during this condition can cause inflammation and nerve root impingement.

  • spinal stenosis  (spinal-canal narrowing) may be seen in persons who experience  pain radiating down both lower extremities while standing for a long time or walking even short distances. Disc degeneration coupled with disease in joints of the low back may be the reason.
  • Cauda equina syndrome is considered as a medical emergency .Disc material expands into the spinal canal, which compresses the nerves.Since the spinal cord is directly compressed, apart from pain, possible loss of sensation, and bowel or bladder dysfunction can occur.Inability to control urination (incontinence) or the inability to begin urination can also be noticed.
  • Fibromyalgia is seen in a person with generalised muscle ache, tenderness, stiffness and fatigue. The pain may feel like a deep ache, or a shooting, burning pain and may get worse with activity, cold or damp weather, anxiety, and stress.
  • Myofascial pain is characterized by pain and tenderness over localized trigger points, Decreased  range of motion in the involved muscle groups, and pain radiating in a characteristic distribution but restricted to a peripheral nerve.Pain is relieved with stretching.
    • Osteomyelitis ( Infection of the bones of the spine) can also cause low back pain.
    • Cancerous tumors can also be a source of skeletal pain.
  • Viral infections like herpes zoster seen in Shingles  can also cause inflamation of  the nerves from the spine. This can occur in the thoracic area to cause upper back pain or in the lumbar area to cause low back pain

Geriatrics in Ayurveda

The human aging can be classified into three.

  • Chronological aging (The number of years a person has lived),
  • Physiological aging (progressive functional decline, or a gradual deterioration of physiological function with age)
  • Psychological aging (Type of aging that a person will experience which may or may not match their actual aging).

Then how can we age gracefully. We have to start the healthy basics from the child hood to maintain a healthy and well nourished body. Mental health should also be taken care of avoiding unnessary stress and strain. Even though we cannot prevent chronological aging, we can prevent physiological aging by keeping physical fitness. Psychological aging also can be slowed down with Yoga and other mental relaxation techiniques.

In Ayurvedic science Rejuvenation or Rasayana treatment is advised specially for individuals who have concern about a health issue or experience physical discomfort or emotional turbulence in their lives.

Geriatrics in Ayurveda focuses on health care of elderly people. It aims to promote health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. There is no set age at which patients may consult a physician as this decision is determined by ones own needs.

Rejuvenating and restorative treatments are designed to reduce stress and anxiety, eliminate toxins, balance and tone your body, calm your mind, and nurture your spirit. Rasayana establishes wellness in the body by releasing emotional tension and physical discomfort, and creates a foundation of wellness and stability in the physiology.
